Catholic Clergy Sexual Abuse: Protecting the Flock from the Shepherds

Doors are Opening for Sexual Abuse Survivors

Like many other clergy sexual abuse survivors, our clients Diana, Keith, and Stanley knew no one would believe their stories about what predators had done to them—the church was above reproach. They suffered in silence. Over time, they lost their right to seek compensation to help make their lives better.
Today, various states have enacted new laws that have revived the claims of many survivors who were sexually abused as children by clergy. Many survivors now have the opportunity to seek compensation and to hold their abusers and the church that protected predator priests accountable.
"The shame, embarrassment, feeling of low self-worth, and scores of 'labels' we give ourselves are not fitting. He was a big man, I was a little boy."

Contact the sexual abuse lawyers at Janet, Janet & Suggs to find out if you are eligible to bring a claim for the torment you have endured, and are continuing to endure. It is imperative that you act without delay as these doors of opportunity won’t stay open for long; some states leave these doors open for as little as one year.

Even in states where the doors to the courthouse have not been opened, many diocese are establishing compensation funds from which survivors can be compensated. But strict time limits have been imposed for applying for compensation, and many other requirements have been established. JJS can help you present your compensation fund claim in the most powerful way possible.

JJS would welcome the opportunity to help you bring a timely and persuasive claim, either in court or with an available compensation fund. Our goal is to help you achieve a full measure of justice and the peace of mind that goes along with it.

All communications with clients are confidential and privileged. While some survivors are comfortable sharing their names publicly, others may prefer maintaining privacy in these matters. If we were to file a lawsuit on your behalf, we could identify you only as a Jane Doe or John Doe.

The JJS Sexual Abuse Division is led by Richard M. Serbin, a crusader in the fight against sexual abuse by clergy and author of "When Clergy Fail Their Flocks." His work on behalf of victims has been featured in numerous national outlets, including The Daily Beast, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Tribune-Democrat, The Wall Street Journal.

Fifteen years before reports of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church circulated in newspapers around the world, before the public believed priests could do any wrong, Richard Serbin was fighting to expose the appalling actions of priests and church leaders. For decades, these “men of God” concealed evidence and accounts of child molestation, pornography, abuse and rape of innocent boys and girls in “secret archives.” Because of Richard’s work, these archives have been brought to light.

Decades of Experience

JJS has been helping clients in need for over 30 years, and has recovered over $3 billion in compensation to help make their lives better. Over the years, we’ve successfully represented over 8,000 sexual abuse survivors.

We pride ourselves on treating survivors and all of our clients with respect and compassion. We leave no stone unturned in our effort to maximize our clients’ compensation and help them move forward. We are here to listen and to help.

An August 2018 report issued by the 40th Statewide Investigating Grand Jury of Pennsylvania pulled back the curtain on a culture of sexual abuse involving more than 300 Catholic priests, officials, teachers, and clergy over a period of more than 70 years. Attorney Richard M. Serbin testified before the Grand Jury and provided assistance to the Attorney General’s office.

Reports from across the country contain eerily similar, harrowing accounts of child sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic priests, officials, and clergy. In many accounts, priests and Church leaders have suppressed these records and gone to great lengths to keep them secret.

“Priests were raping little boys and girls and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades, Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, and cardinals have mostly been protected…many have been promoted…Shepherds must stop preying upon the flock.”
